Artists Who Had Rheumatoid Arthritis
Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in 1841. He was one of the world’s most celebrated impressionist painters. Renoir also suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis for most of his life. However, his symptoms didn’t manifest until he was in his 50s. They became aggressive at about the age of 60. This led to almost complete disability when he was 70 years old.
Some of the deformities Renoir suffered because of the Rheumatoid Arthritis were disabling. However, he never stopped painting nor decreased the quality of his work. The transition between styles adopted by the painter (Impressionist, Dry and Pearly periods) bear no relationship to the stages of flare-ups or the establishment of joint deformities due to Rheumatoid Arthritis. Renoir’s work shows aspects of the body’s ability to overcome pain and physical limitation.
Alexej von Jawlensky
Alexej von Jawlensky was born in 1864. He was a Russian from origin, and was one of the most important expressionist painters active in Germany. Additionally, Jawlensky was the first painter in the 20th century who created extensive series of paintings especially of human faces.
Jawlensky’s rapidly progressing, late-onset of RA induced depression, disability, financial pressure and social retreat. However, the resulting artistic sublimation contributed to the change in his paintings.
